First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones

"Charley Davidson is a part-time private investigator and full-time grim reaper. Meaning, she sees dead people. Really. And it's her job to convince them to "go into the light." But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (like murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she's been having about an entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely. But what does he want with Charley? And why can't she seem to resist him? And what does she have to lose by giving in?"

Well, that certainly sounds interesting, why not give it a shot? First Grave on the Right is a light, funny read that will have you reaching for the next one (Second Grave on the Left) as soon as your done with it.

Don't believe me? Here's a few snippets from the book:

  • "'I have three words for you,' EMT Guy said. 'Possible internal bleeding.' I turned back to him. 'Don’t you think if I was bleeding internally, I’d know somewhere deep inside? Like, internally?'"
  • "'I'm good, boss. I can do this with my eyes closed.' 'Only 'cause you can see through your lids.' 'True,' he said with a shrug."
  • "I knew dating the son of Satan would turn out badly."
  • "'You make it through a drunken bull hell-bent on rearranging your face, a ten-foot fall through a skylight, and not one, but two attempted murders, only to be brought down by a stiletto. I knew those things were dangerous.'"

And my personal favorite:

  • "'Just because I see dead people doesn't mean I want to be dead people.'"

Charlotte (Charley) Davidson is just the right mix of bad-ass, sarcasm, and hilarity to carry this book. Being the Grim Reaper, she sees plenty of dead people, even enlists a few to help her. Charley is the reason that first her father and now her uncle are such successful detectives on the APD. She's followed by this black cloud of shadow that shows up when she's in a particularly dangerous situation, which is often. Thus, she dubs the cloud "The Big Bad". Just what is The Big Bad? Dive on in and find out for yourself!
